The staff and the other Artists take me for who I am and I’ve never had people treat me like that before.
Ellie Mason has been with Spare Tyre for over 10 years. She is a talented writer and performer and her experiences as a wheelchair user influence much of her work. Since being with Spare Tyre she has completed an accredited course in theatre skills, performed in numerous shows and written for BBC Radio London. In 2016 she co-created and performed in Nights at the Circus for which she won Performance Artist of the Year at the Sexual Freedom Awards.
'Spare Tyre has enabled me to think about my disability and myself in a more positive way and has given me more confidence. I have met friends that care about me and help me as well. The staff and the other Artists take me for who I am and I’ve never had people treat me like that before. The people I work with at Spare Tyre are like a family to me.
First, I thought being in a wheelchair, I wouldn’t be able to perform, but now I can. I’ve even done a dance piece which actually got me out of my chair in front of an audience.'
