Once Upon a Time with Lambeth Council
April 2014, Lambeth, London
In April 2014 Spare Tyre was commissioned by London Borough of Lambeth Adult Social Care Department to deliver Once Upon a Time training to staff at day care centres in Lambeth for people with advanced dementia. The aim of the training was for the care staff to develop creative skills that improve meaningful and person-centred engagement with their clients with advanced dementia.
Spare Tyre Facilitators delivered interactive storytelling workshops to day care centre users with advanced dementia, with care staff observing. This was followed by training which encouraged the care staff to think about and try out their own ideas of creative activity with their clients, with the aim of building this into their daily routine. The focus was on non-verbal communication and a multisensory approach. Spare Tyre Facilitators have since visited the staff again, to find out how they have progressed as a result of the training.
The care staff who took part commented that during the interactive workshop, their clients were significantly engaged. For example one client who doesn’t normally engage with activity was dancing with staff during the session. The clients were also very relaxed. During the training the care staff commented on the potential of using non-verbal communication, and the importance of taking time over the activity.
